Discovery Aquatics - About Us - A Fishy Story

Our Philosophy

Everytime you visit Discovery Aquatics we want you to learn something new. As your knowledge increases, so will your success. Rest assured, you will receive quality advice. We have years of experience and continuously research the latest in technology.

We do our part to preserve the coral reefs. Unlike most stores, we order livestock that has a high survival rate in captivity. We also purchase a number of Aquacultured and Propagated corals and Tank-Raised Fish to reduce our environmental footprint.

Finally, we strive to exceed your expectations. Discovery Aquatics aims to provide superior customer service, quality products and truthful answers to your questions.

Our Aquariums

We believe that what works for one person doesn't always work for everyone, but there are some general guidelines that can increase your chances of success.

• We prefer heavy protein skimming and shy away from bioballs and undergravel filters.
• We think superior water quality begins with a Reverse Osmosis unit.
• We believe high water flow can reduce detritus and promote healthy coral growth.

A Fishy Story

As far back as he can remember, Jake Hagberg has always had an aquarium. Like many hobbyists, he began with a simple freshwater tank filled with tetras. At age ten, he was inspired by a family friend to start his first saltwater aquarium.

At age sixteen, he earned a job at PetSmart, where he learned the importance and value of exceptional customer service. As a result, customers often asked him to set up and maintain their aquariums. In response to the growing demand, Jake started an aquarium setup and maintenance company, known today as Discovery Aquatics.

As business continued to grow, the decision to open a storefront was made. Jake wanted the store to be different. A place where reef enthusiasts found premium corals and beginner hobbyists received honest advice.

Jake has also completed his education at the University of St. Thomas, where he holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Entrepreneurship. Jake was also a featured guest on the Talking Reef Podcast. You can listen to him speak about operating RazerCorals, an online coral business by downloading the Podcast Podcast (.mp3, 24.0 MB).
